Iraqi authorities hung the former dictator just before dawn on Shabbos after he was convicted in a months-long trial of being responsible for the 1982 killing of 142 men and boys in the town of Dujail. Saddam led his country into multiple conflicts that cost over a million lives. He launched 39 Scud missiles on Israel unprovoked during the 1991 Persian Gulf War and financed Palestinian terrorist groups among other things.
PS.It’s interesting to note that the war in Iraq started on the 16th of Adar 5763 the day exactly 12 years after the Rebbe King Messiah spoke about the future victory of America in it’s war against “Basra” (Iraq) like it says in Isaiah 63 “Who is that coming from Edom in crimsoned garments from Basra etc.”)(majority of war casualties on our side primarily among the British soldier were in Basra specifically ) . - day of liberation from prison of the 1st Rebbe of Chabad ) he was brought before the judge the 1st time on 12th of Tamuz the birthday and the day of liberation of the 6th Rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch (the father in law of the Rebbe King Moshiach) from the Soviet internal exile in 1927 and his final appeal was denied on 5th of Teves known as “didan notzach” – we won the day celebrated by Chabad Chassidim since 1987 when the federal court found that priceless books stolen from Chabad library by a relative of the Previous Rebbe of blessed memory who claimed they belong to him as part inheritance belong to all the Chassidim and must be returned to Agudas Chassidei Chabad.
And finally Sadam was executed by hanging this Shabbat 9th of Tevet the day preceding the 10th of Teves the start of the siege of Jerusalem by the Babylonian emperor king Nevuhadnetzer that led to the destruction of the 1st temple of Somomon and the 70 year old Babylonian exile.

There are those who don’t fast on his day as the Rebbe King Messiah said in 1991 that Rabbis should decree that these fasts no longer apply since Messiah is finally here and we are in the process of redemption when as the sages teach these 4 fasts associated with the destruction of the temples shall be turned into days of rejoicing.
May we soon see the rebuilding of the holy temple in Jerusalem with complete and final redemption when all nations will serve G-d in one accord.

…Or Is It Spiritual Abuse?

Have you been a victim of spiritual abuse? (I have modified the text to make it less Christian-centric):

Some writers conceptualize a set of discernible characteristics of spiritual abuse. Ronald Enroth in Churches That Abuse identifies five categories:

1. Authority and Power – abusive (institutions) misuse and distort the concept of spiritual authority. Abuse arises when leaders of a…group arrogate to themselves power and authority that lacks the dynamics of open accountability and the capacity to question or challenge decisions made by leaders. The shift entails moving from general respect for an office bearer to one where members loyally submit without any right to dissent.

2. Manipulation and Control – abusive (institutions) are characterized by social dynamics where fear, guilt, and threats are routinely used to produce unquestioning obedience, group conformity, and stringent tests of loyalty to the leaders are demonstrated before the group. Biblical concepts of the leader-disciple relationship tend to develop into a hierarchy where the leader’s decisions control and usurp the disciple’s right or capacity to make choices on spiritual matters or even in daily routines of what form of employment, form of diet and clothing are permitted.

3. Elitism and Persecution – abusive (institutions) depict themselves as unique in God’s plans and have a strong organizational tendency to be separate from other…bodies and institutions. The social dynamism of the group involves being independent or separate, with diminishing possibilities for internal correction and reflection. Outside criticism and evaluation is dismissed as the disruptive efforts of evil people seeking to hinder or thwart God’s plans.

4. Life-style and Experience – abusive (institutions) foster rigidity in behaviour and in belief that requires unswerving conformity to the group’s ideals and social mores.

5. Dissent and Discipline – abusive (institutions) tend to suppress any kind of internal challenges and dissent concerning decisions made by leaders. Acts of discipline may involve emotional and physical humiliation, physical violence or deprivation, acute and intense acts of punishment for dissent and disobedience.

The previous post included, many posts I have noticed here on “the Cow” have had one sentiment in common. “Screw you, O charedi world, with all of your monochrome legislation, I am angry.” How much of that is the voice of a victim of spiritual abuse?

Spiritual abuse is not necessarily manifested as physical or sexual abuse. This is psycho-emotional abuse inflicted on the spiritual psyche, and lambasting groups of people and angry screaming does not stop the abuse. Only increasing visibility and mobilizing victims to recognize the fact they are being abused does that.

Many times, spiritual abuse is passed off in the religious community as being “normal” or “expected”, leaving the victim to curse their community or their religion, never realizing “I was just abused by institution X”. Placing the blame on Judaism, Orthodoxy, etc. effectively takes the blame off of the abuser. ‘On the Secular new year’

When Jews tell me ‘Happy New Year,’ I respond with “It’s not my new year–or yours.” They laugh. “Oh, are you trying to make a dati/frumm statement?” Actually no. It’s deeper than that…

A few years ago, I was sitting in a bar in
New Orleans with some friends for New Year’s Eve. At about 11:50pm, I fell over and couldn’t breathe and didn’t know why. It turns out that I was hit by a stray bullet shot from 5-7 miles away, shot up in the air, in “celebration” of the new year, by some stranger who would never know that he or she almost ended my life. Luckily, thank GD, emergency surgery saved me and I did wake up on January 1st , in the hospital ICU, Intensive Care Unit. What was a nice Jewish girl like me who studied well, served on student council, did mitzvahs, and believed in peace doing with a bullet in her stomach? How in the world could this be?!

Hospital staff told my family and I that actually this happens every year on December 31st. There are many cities that have a problem with people shooting guns up in the air to “celebrate the new year,” only apparently, many people don’t know that what goes up, must come down. What kind of “celebration” is it anyway, if it ends your life?

At first I denied that anything had changed. I went back to the university and tried to keep everything the same. But nothing would ever be the same again. The shooting had opened my eyes in a new way, changed my perspective on the world. Suddenly, I learned that “safety” did not exist, the physical world seemed like a big illusion, or trick. All I could count on was/is Spirit; everything else could disappear. I was angry and depressed for many years afterwards, trying to figure out ‘Why me?’ ‘What’s the meaning in suffering?’ ‘What did I do to deserve this?’ and ‘How could people be so clueless and careless about the value of human life?’ Job had asked many of the same questions. Over time, my anger has turned to an insatiable hunger for living life to its fullest, to breathing, speaking, creating art, laughing, singing songs on Shabbas for the sake of seizing the moment because who knows when we’ll move on to another realm. I have to say, in spite of the pain, part of me is also grateful for having a peak at worlds beyond the physical, at the grey spaces between near-death and still alive, at the worlds where you have to close your eyes in order to see.

If I had to choose one lesson to tell the world about this experience, I’d say ‘Every action has a reaction, even when we can’t see it with the human eye.’ The person who shot the gun has no idea how much pain & tzurras he caused me and my family. If you think you’re just living in “your world,” with “your box,” minding “your business.” Think again. All is One. Echad. We are inter-connected, affecting each other more than we know. Please, dear hippalas (hippy Yids) who are reading this and to all, let’s do our part to wake up to a greater consciousness and spread it. Blessings for health, happiness, love, and life balance.

p.s. Don’t be pressured to think you have to celebrate big for dec 31st. celebrate your life in some authentic way & it just may help lift up all the tzurras that’s happening in the world that night.

Dreams about the men in my life

Dream:

I went to some new age woman for some kind of psychological help. Wrote her a check. She said something critical about me and about money. I said “if you’re going to insult me, don’t take my check.” grabbed it back.
I felt a little bit guilty and went over it in my mind, but stuck to my guns. “She’s giving me the wrong kind of help, it’s not lifting me up but bringing me down.”
I began to pack up my stuff but kept losing the check, but eventually found it. but all along, kept on planning in my head about going to the bank, cancelling the check, etc.
packed up all my stuff, and she was all nice and friendly. I can’t remember exactly how now. She offered my some kind of practical help which was useful and accepted but I don’t remember the details.
I think I was joined by someone else at this time, but I don’t remember exactly.
On our way home we were accosted by some homeless man asking for money to get to a certain vacation spot, the only place he had ever known real happiness. I thought about it but refused, feeling very bad.
The psychological woman is Na”n for sure, and I am trying to get my “check” back- my self esteem and confidence, my own perspective.

I don’t know if the homeless man symbolizes anyone, or if he is Hummus. As far as I know I’m not seeing Hummus out of pity, maybe initially but not anymore. I saw him as a nebech but not anymore. L’hefech I’m using him- as a present rebounder and future sperm donor. But I may eventually decide the “cost” is too high to go on “vacation” with him. Even a life in rural Thailand or wherever.

Does anyone really think it is possible to reach a settlement with the Palestinians that will guarantee peace between us?

I can understand that there are those who believe it may be possible to reach a settlement. And I can understand that there are those who hope it is possible to reach a settlement. But does anyone really think it is possible to make peace with the Palestinians – I mean, really think so?

How can one not see the rift among them, their inability to administer their own lives, Fatah’s helplessness, Hamas’s abysmal hatred, the murderousness of the popular resistance organizations, the destructive influence of radical Islam, the interference of Iran and the belief – so deeply rooted in almost every Arab heart – that, sooner or later, Israel will disappear off the map?

How can anyone see all that and still think there is a chance for a peace settlement? Or that all the different Palestinian factions, so hostile not only to us but to each other, will somehow find a way to cooperate in order to reach a settlement with Israel?

EVEN IF Israel agreed to withdraw to the 1967 borders (and it doesn’t); even if Israel agreed to allow the refugees to return to Israel within the 1967 borders (and it doesn’t); would Hamas ever recognize the right of a Jewish state to exist in the heart of the Muslim Middle East?

After all, Hamas’s entire raison d’etre is founded on its refusal to recognize Israel’s right to exist. Its members would sooner convert to Judaism than relinquish that principle.

True, anything is possible. But not in the foreseeable future. Not in this generation. And if not the Palestinians, then radical Islam will make sure there is no peace agreement with Israel.

Iran on one side and al-Qaida on the other are threatening not only Israel, but the regimes in Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Egypt as well. Israel isn’t even their first target, it is their last.

WHAT SHOULD we conclude from all this? That the time has come to emigrate from Israel? Maybe give in to the Arabs’ demands? Perhaps put an end to the Zionist enterprise and close up shop?

Never. Israel will continue to exist and flourish, as it has existed and flourished since the establishment of the state, thanks, among other reasons, to the Arab boycott, which forced it to export computer software to America and Europe instead of making plastic toys for the market in Damascus. (Did any of us ever imagine that the shekel might one day become stronger than the dollar, or that we would export more than we import?)

Yet, while the leaders of the Islamic countries have not accepted Israel’s existence in principle, they have accepted it in fact – and only because they know they cannot wipe Israel off the map without themselves being wiped off as well.

And that, rather than any pie-in-the-sky, illusory hope for the brotherhood of nations, is the basis for the relationship between us. In the entire Muslim world, numbering over a billion people, one would be hard-pressed to find even a dozen willing to stand up and justify Israel’s existence.

THIS DOES not mean we should forget about striving for peace. We must behave as if we believed that it was possible to achieve a peace settlement. Why? Because if we do not strive for peace, the result will be war. And we do not want war.

But even as we strive for peace, even if we follow the road map, we mustn’t delude ourselves. We won’t arrive at peace, not here.

But it may be possible to reach a modus vivendi, a balance of terror and a balance of mutual interests that will enable us to lead our lives more or less normally. And not just for a year or two, but for generations.

If we foster no illusions, we won’t be disappointed.

Marijuana Ranks As Top US Cash Crop

Washington, DC: Cannabis is the largest cash crop in the United States, outpacing the production of corn and wheat combined, according to an economic analysis released this week.

According to the study, “Marijuana Production in the United States, 2006,” domestic marijuana production has increased ten-fold in the past 25 years from 1,000 metric tons ( 2.2 million pounds) to 10,000 metric tons (22 million pounds) and now has an estimated annual value of $36 billion.

“Despite their best efforts, the [government] has been unable to curtail the growth of domestic marijuana cultivation in the United States, let alone make any progress toward suppressing, abolishing, or eliminating this market phenomenon,” the report states. “The focus for public policy should be how to effectively control this market through regulation and taxation in order to achieve immediate and realistic goals, such as reducing teenage access, rather than to continue to sacrifice achievable goals in exchange for unachievable long-term goals that have failed to materialize over the last 25 years.”

According to the report, marijuana cultivation in California is responsible for more than a third of all US pot production.

Cannabis ranks as the top cash crop in twelve states and is worth more than $1 billion annually in five states: California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Hawaii, and Washington.

A 1998 NORML report estimated the value of domestic marijuana production at that time at approximately $25 billion.
