on chabad and breslov

MysticalPaths.blogspot is run by a Chabad Chosid and a Breslov Chosid. Here are a few snippets…

posted by Akiva

More on Chabad – Breslov relations, a guest post from Chabakuk Elisha…

(see sefer Shivcho shel Tzaddik):

* The Alter Rebbe defended R’ Nachman and supported him in the machlokes against R’ Nachman and said: “R’ Nachman places himself in nisyonos, he is a great man, a mighty warrior.” (Beis Rebbe)

* R’ Zelig Slonim said (a descendant of the Alter Rebbe and the leader of Chabad in Chevron) that when visiting Lubavitch he stayed at the home of Rebbetzin Rivka (wife of the Rebbe Maharash, daughter-in-law of the Tzemach Tzeddek & mother of the Rebbe Rashab). In conversation, she spoke of R’ Nachman and stated that the Alter Rebbe defended R’ Nachman, announcing: “Anyone who opposes R Nachman, opposes me” – and emphasized that not only is he on R’ Nachman’s side, but that “he who opposes R’ Nachman is opposing the Alter Rebbe and the Alter Rebbe’s daas, MAMASH.”

* In the first printing of the Siddur, the Alter Rebbe included the haskoma of R’ Yekusiel, the Maggid of Terhovetza (student of the Maggid of Mezritch and subsequently an adherent of R’ Nachman)

* When R’ Nachman returned from Eretz Yisroel he went directly to the Baal HaTanya in White Russia (quite a distance out of his way) arriving before Shabbos Chazon (9 Av 5559 -1779) in Liozna. When the Chassidim found out that R’ Nachman had come to town they received him with great honor and came out to greet him dressed in their Shabbos clothing. The Alter Rebbe was overjoyed to welcome R’ Nachman, and they showed each other great closeness and love. They spoke for many hours, and after R’ Nachman declined to speak publicly, the Alter Rebbe delivered a maamar for six hours without stop.

* On one occasion R’ Nachman hinted to the Alter Rebbe that they would become mechutanim one day, and indeed R’ Aharon (Arke) of Krementchug (son of the Alter Rebbe’s favorite daughter Freid’ke) married R’ Nachman’s daughter Chaya (his second marriage). R’ Aharon was a great gaon & baki – he one said about R’ Nosson of Breslov, “He knows all the writings of the AriZal on the back of his hand.”

* R’ Mordechai, a chossid of R’ Nachman, was one of the rabbonim in Teplik. Once a question regarding an Aguna was brought to him and he was inclined to permit the Aguna to remarry. The Alter Rebbe came to Teplik, so R’ Mordechai consulted with him, and the A”R agreed with R’ Mordechai’s decision. After their meeting, the Alter Rebbe showed R’ Mordechai great honor and when departing, the A”R said: “Teplik has two rabbonim… but R’ Mordechai is worth a hon rav (a wordplay on the word rav – hon rav meaning exceedingly valuable).”

* When the Tzemach Tzedek was shown the Breslover sforim “Likkutei Halachos,” the Tzemach Tzedek said “Kulanu bnei ish echad nachnu”.

* R’ Isralev, who’s grandfather was a close talmid of the T”T, used to say that the T”T once heard someone disparaging R’ Nosson. The T”T became angry and ordered the individual to accept rebuke immediately. Similarly, R’ Zelig Slonim said that once someone had thrown R’ Nosson’s sefer to the floor. The Tzemach Tzededk saw this and ordered the man to sit on the floor and immediately accept rebuke publicly.

* Breslover Chassidim, R’ Baruch Efrayim (author of sefer Bibi Hanachal on Likutei Mohoran), R’ Mendele Litvak (student of R’ Nachman Tulchiner), and R’ Shimile Homiler were all Chassidim of the Tzemach Tzedek who became Breslover Chassidim after his passing. It is said that R’ Baruch Efrayim had been one of the “choizrim” of the Tzemach Tzedek.

* Once, the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe (R’ Yosef Yitzchok), visited Teplik. Upon his arrival, all the Yidden came to greet him and brought kvitlach – and among them was a Breslover Chossid named R’ Elimelech Tepliker. The Rebbe Rayatz told him: “Everyone has seforim in their home, but when traveling, one only brings along the seforim that he uses regularly.” While saying these words, the Rebbe showed him that he had brought along his Likkutei Moharan.

* Also, the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe (Rebbe Rayatz) had a sefer Likutei Halachos on his desk at the time of his passing.

* R’ Avrohom Sternhartz – a direct descendant of R’ Nosson and Breslover Manhig in the early to mid 1900’s) was Rov in Kremenchug (a city with a large Lubavitcher kehila). R’ Avrohom was very close to the Lubavitcher Chassidim there and even recited the maamar on 19 Kislev. (also see this)

* R’ Gedalya Aharon Kenig (former Breslover manhig in Tzefas – and father of R’ Elazar Mordechai, the current manhig of Breslov in Tzefas) had been a Chabad Chossid (it is said that he was actually a Chabad mashpia in Yerushalyim) before meeting and becoming the Talmud muvhak of R Avrohom Sternhartz.

Should I look for more?

We’re always ready for more stories of ahavas yisroel and positive relations between brothers and cousins (all chassidim and all yidden!) But I think you covered the specific Chabad/Breslov relationship pretty well. Thanks!

new sanhedrin: kill, kill, kill.

…the revived Sanhedrin movement – or high court of Jewish law – ruled that Naveh was guilty of three crimes: “Causing the masses to sin”; being a “moser” – someone who informs against fellow Jews or hands over Jews or Jewish land to gentiles; and terrifying the public in a blasphemous way.”

In their decision, the rabbis referred to a ruling made by the 12th century Jewish philosopher Maimonides, according to which “it is permissible to kill a moser everywhere, even in this time when the courts do not rule on capital cases…”

ataturk, shabsi tzvi’s decendant, said shma yisroel! yalhak?

Ben-Avi describes two meetings with Mustafa Kemal, who had not yet taken the name of Ataturk, ‘Father of the Turks.’ Both were conducted in French, were largely devoted to Ottoman politics, and were doused with large amounts of arrack. In the first of these, Kemal confided:

“I’m a descendant of Sabbetai Zevi – not indeed a Jew any more, but an ardent admirer of this prophet of yours. My opinion is that every Jew in this country would do well to join his camp.”

During their second meeting, held 10 days later in the same hotel, Mustafa Kemal said at one point:

” ‘I have at home a Hebrew Bible printed in Venice. It’s rather old, and I remember my father bringing me to a Karaite teacher who taught me to read it. I can still remember a few words of it, such as –’ “

And Ben-Avi continues:
“He paused for a moment, his eyes searching for something in space. Then he recalled:
” ‘Shema Yisra’el, Adonai Elohenu, Adonai Ehad!’
” ‘That’s our most important prayer, Captain.’
” ‘And my secret prayer too, cher monsieur,’ he replied, refilling our glasses.”

Although Itamar Ben-Avi could not have known it, Ataturk no doubt meant “secret prayer” quite literally. Among the esoteric prayers of the Doenme, first made known to the scholarly world when a book of them reached the National Library in Jerusalem in 1935, is one containing the confession of faith:

“Sabbetai Zevi and none other is the true Messiah. Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.”

It was undoubtedly from this credo, rather than from the Bible, that Ataturk remembered the words of the Shema, which to the best of my knowledge he confessed knowing but once in his adult life: to a young Hebrew journalist whom he engaged in two tipsily animated conversations in Jerusalem nearly a decade before he took control of the Turkish army after its disastrous defeat in World War I, beat back the invading Greeks and founded a secular Turkish republic in which Islam was banished – once and for all, so he thought – to the mosques.

Ataturk would have had good reasons for concealing his Doenme origins. Not only were the Doenmes (who married only among themselves and numbered close to 15,000, largely concentrated in Salonika, on the eve of World War I) looked down on as heretics by both Muslims and Jews, they had a reputation for sexual profligacy that could hardly have been flattering to their offspring.

Racist Incidents Nationwide On MLK Day

From Y-LOVE:

A news story done on a racist college party for Martin Luther King Day at Tarleton State University:

My MySpace blog, This Is Babylon lists some of the other racist travesties which took place around the country, including this bitch, who is supposed to be Aunt Jemima:

I can’t even rant a second time. Racists need to be called out for what they are in the most graphic terms possible. If parties like this weren’t seen as “cool” to attend, they would not have such the turnout.

But as long as racism is seen as acceptable, or even “cool” and desirable, things like this will continue to happen, little kids will continue to spraypaint swastikas on things, Islamophobic beatings will still continue.

It’s all about reward and punishment. These racist party promoters have been “socially rewarded” with party turnouts and facebook links. They — and avid racists in general — need to be “socially punished” and rendered as outcasts — because their mindsets, to say the least, show they “can not play nicely” with the rest of society.

A selection from the Wikipedia entry for ‘Baal Shem Tov’

Besht’s miraculous power was so great that he did not fear even the brigands who lived in the mountains but dwelt carefree in their vicinity. Once, when wandering about, deeply immersed in thought, he climbed a steep mountain and, without noticing where he was going, reached a very dangerous spot. Besht thought that his end had come, for he felt himself slipping toward a deep precipice; but suddenly the opposite cliff approached and closed up the gap. The robbers, who were looking on at a distance, doubted no longer that he was a man endowed with divine power.Of course this story must be dismissed as falsehood because the idea of a man god is totally rejected by Judaism. Indeed , all who are of rationality deny this utter lie.

Isaiah 17: The Nuking of Damascus

Marylou’s America — Theology, Source.

By Marylou Barry

When the Hebrew prophet Isaiah wrote his biblical account some 2,700 years ago, he relayed a prophecy God had given him about the destruction of Damascus, Syria. He couched nothing in ambiguity.

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid … though you set out the finest plants and plant imported vines, though on the day you set them out, you make them grow, and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest will be as nothing in the day of disease and incurable pain … In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us, the lot of those who plunder us.” – Isaiah 17:1-2, 10-11, 14, NIV.

So, if I am reading this correctly, somewhere between planting and harvesting seasons in some unnamed year, someone is going to annihilate Damascus, Syria, with its million-plus population, in an overnight raid? The harvest will be “as nothing”? The attack will be “sudden terror” with survivors experiencing “disease and incurable pain”? Aroer (unclear, but possibly Jordan) will be likewise afflicted? Before the morning “they are not”? This information has been out there for over two millennia and NO ONE IS PAYING ANY ATTENTION?

six fat calve

Six youngsters between ages of 12 and 15 from coastal town Bat-Yam, south of Tel Aviv, arrested for burning Israeli flag and mezuzah parchments torn from doorposts. The boys, not all Jewish, explain ‘We loath anything related to Judaism’

The boys later told police that they had learnt this from the Neturei Karta and an ex-rebbe from Mayanot.

CHAIM VITAL, BOOK OF VISIONS

Here’s some Chayim Vital material. It’s from his “Sefer Hachizyonos” (‘Book of Visions”). It has been printed several times under the title “Shivkhey Rabi Chayim Vital.” a version from a manuscript in his own handwriting has been recently published, & it is very similar to the “Shivkhey.” It was written towards the end of his life. I think parts, if not all, were already printed, most notably by Louis Jacobs in one of his books on the first person jewish mystical accounts (“Jewish Mystical Testimonies”), but I do not have it, nor do I know where else it was translated — so here it is, piecemeal, by your truly. I follow the text of the “Shivkhey” located here The numbering of the paragraphs is my own. Anything in brackets is my own addition.

THE BOOK OF VISIONS also known as PRAISES OF RABBI CHAIM VITAL

(copied from r. ch. v.’s handwriting, letter by letter:)

[1] In the year 5301 to creation [1540-1 c.e.], when my father was still [living] outside Israel, a great learned man by the name Rabbi Chaim Ashkenazi lodged with him and told him: “know, that you are destined to go to Israel and reside there, and you will give birth to a son, and you will name him with my name chaim, and he will be a great sage, for there will be no one like him in his generation.” and after two years of my father’s arrival to israel I was born, and this was in the year 5343 to creation [1542-3]

Lisa, Martin, and Karen

B”H

OUR Family PROFILE
An unfolding story of a polygamous family in Seattle, Washington

Lisa, Martin, and Karen
How we met

Martin and Karen met at a dance convention in Palm Springs in 1995. They found common interest in dancing, biology, and building houses. They became dance partners and started competing together, winning championships in California and Washington in various dance styles.

Karen joined Martin in Seattle, Washington in 1998, where they built their dream home together in the greater Seattle area. They met Lisa in 2002, when she moved into the neighborhood with her two sons.
At the petting zoo.
Lisa became a frequent visitor to Martin and Karen’s home, playing duets with Martin and learning to dance from Karen. The three started going out together. A year later, Martin and Karen added a wing to their home for Lisa and her sons, and Lisa became Karen’s sister-wife. Karen announced the relationship to the community at a general meeting in 2003.

Lisa and Karen making zuchini
A little more about each of us

Martin (59) has been a dancer, musician, Vietnam vet, lecturer, author, interpreter, and computer programmer. He’s lived and worked in Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam, Germany, and Sweden. He has a B.A. in Asian Culture (Brown U.) and an M.A. in Dance Anthropology (UCLA). He currently writes for Microsoft.

Karen (62) is a retired AP (advanced placement) bilingual biology teacher. She has one handicapped daughter, Maria, and two sons, Martin and Michael. Karen has been a ballet dancer, house contractor, and jewelry designer. She has an M.S. in biology.

Lisa (47) is a piano teacher, Reiki master, and health educator. She has two sons, James and Josh. In Lisa’s words, here is her story…
Lisa and Karen

I actually had thoughts of my first husband having a second wife during my first marriage, but never spoke about it. We were monogamous and had a Christian background, so this was a taboo subject matter. I was very ill during the last 4 years of our marriage and a second wife could have relieved me and tended to the needs of my husband and probably could have saved our marriage instead of it turning to divorce.
Martin’s 60s birthday.
I had no idea that many years later I would be living in polygamy. I wasn’t particularly looking for it, it just happened. We just happen to be the right people for each other. Perhaps we owe our success to our personalities and background that just happen to work for all of us.
Their home
The thing that I love most about our relationship is the support that we all have for each other. Karen has frequently helped me and Martin out of a few disagreements as have I with the two of them. I like that I can support Karen in the things she loves to do. She likes to work outside in the yard for several hours at a time, and Martin likes to have someone nearby and not feel left by himself. So I can fulfill this need for the both of them, by being with Martin when Karen likes to work outside. Also Karen likes to take trips to see her daughter out of state frequently. I can stay at home with Martin so he doesn’t feel left behind. So Karen gets what she needs without feeing guilty, Martin gets what he needs without feeling left behind. And I get my needs met by feeing that I have an important part of holding things together. I also have a strong need to not be alone too much, so this also fulfills my need in this way by being with Martin.

It is so symbiotic, that we frequently don’t have to even discuss these matters. We just know intuitively what each other needs. We also can be honest with each other and all sit down and say what’s on our mind if we aren’t feeling great about something or feel that we have a need that isn’t being met. We probably know more about each other than anyone has ever known about us personally. The realness and honesty are beautiful and really bond us together.
Lis Marting and Karen have a blog http://www.PolygamyNOW.blogspot.com
about their own family story in progress as well interersting thouhts on various other subjects.
They have recently profiled Pilegesh.org and PilegeshPersonals.com aka JewishPolygamy.com on their popular blog after becoming aware of us when I posted birthday greeting for Martin few days ago on his blog.

Rabbis: Israeli porno not kosher

Have you ever seen a porn movie with a kosher stamp? Kashrut authority was shocked to discover its symbol on a DVD

Yaniv Halily

Published: 01.28.07, 16:46

Israeli actors are depicted having sex against landscapes such as the Kinneret, the Galilee, and Tel Aviv. Only after US company that grants kosher certificates threatens porn movie’s producer with lawsuit is kosher stamp taken off of DVD packages. The movie “Assraelis” was produced by a Los Angeles-based porn movie company, Tight Fit, which is headed by Oren Cohen, an Israeli. On the package of the DVD version of the movie, which is sold on the Internet for USD 25, is affixed a kosher stamp similar to those appearing on kosher food products sold in the American market. The stamp is made up of the Hebrew letter ‘kaf’ (the first letter of the word kosher in Hebrew). The letter ‘k’ (short for kosher, in English) is inset inside the Hebrew letter. Around this logo is written: “Shot in Israel, 100 percent authentic.”However, the marketing gimmick Cohen was looking to create was met by a warning letter and the threat of legal charges. The lawyers of the company, Kuf K, which grants kosher certificates to food products in the United States, sent a warning letter to Cohen, demanding that he remove the kosher stamp from the DVD package. The company claimed in the letter that the kosher stamp used by Cohen is the spiritual property of Kuf K, and that only companies marketing food stuff can place the stamp on their products after having receiving permission to do so from Kuf K. Cohen was shocked when he received the letter. “Do they have rights to a letter?” he quipped in an interview.
